Chelsea Strayer

Chelsea Strayer is a double bassist from southern California who specializes in
contemporary music. In 2018 she received her bachelors’ degree in Double Bass
Performance and Music Education from Peabody Conservatory where she studied under Ira
Gold. Chelsea is now completing her master’s degree at the Yale School of Music and is
currently working with Don Palma. Throughout her time playing the bass Chelsea has
performed with many different professional orchestras and chamber ensembles as a
freelance musician throughout the United States. She also has had an extensive teaching
career as she been faculty at Bassworks for five years, worked as an elementary school
strings teacher, coached at various middle and high schools, has helped run the ISB young
bassists program, and manages her own teaching studio. Chelsea is extremely passionate
about combining her love for performing new works and teaching and is planning on
continuing her education to receive her PhD. Her focus for this degree will be on creating
resources for young bassists to help them have access and the tools that they need to
explore the world of contemporary music.
